IN SAINT-GEORGES-DES-AGOÛTS
If you know your way around the French lingo, you’ll know that rhymes. Kind of. And if you don’t, don’t worry about it. The locals love it when we say it wrong. It makes them smile.
Where is Saint-Georges-des-Agoûts?
However you want to say it, our little village of Saint-Georges-des-Agoûts can be found nestled on the border between two of France’s finest departments.
Charente-Maritime, home to La Rochelle, Rochefort and Royan to name a few. And to the south, Gironde. Named after the Gironde Estuary and home to the world famous city of Bordeaux.
Both departments can be found on the most western part of France, around half way down along the Atlantic coast.
What’s the area of Saint-Georges like?
Saint-Georges-des-Agoûts is a quiet hamlet in the French countryside. We are surrounded by fields and woods. If you take a 5 minute stroll, you can see the Gironde estuary.
It’s a sleepy part of the world where you can hear the birds in the trees throughout the day. We do get the odd jet plane overhead, and that’s a sight (and sound) for sure!
But you’re more likely to spot the local hawks, pheasants or galloping deer. There is a small convenience store about 3km away in the nearest village, Saint-Bonnet-sur-Gironde. The nearest supermarket is around a 10 minute drive away.

Despite our little ‘basecamp’ being a rather secluded spot, there are plenty of things to do in the area, especially if you have a car.
Here are a few of the main destinations and activities that you might want to consider doing while on holiday in Saint-Georges-des-Agoûts, Charente-Maritime.
We’ve begun building a shortlist, grouped together based on category or distance because that seems a helpful way to plan your stay.
Of course, you are welcome to just stay here and chill. Watch nature unfold over the hills, unwind or relax as you wish.

Port de Vitrezay / Pole-nature Vitrezay is a renowned nature reserve on the bank of the Gironde in Saint-Sorlin-de-Conac.

Mirambeau and Jonzac (10-20 minute drive)
Our nearest ‘bigger’ towns begin with Mirambeau, Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde, and Jonzac. These areas usually provide you with everything you need for convenience and shopping. Plus Jonzac has The Antilles and world famous Thermal Spa. Braud-et-Saint-Louis should also get a mention (15 mins away) for its indoor/outdoor swimming pool and facilities.

Local markets
Visiting a local market full of French produce is a must when you stay here. We recommend Blaye market, especially on a Saturday morning. Followed by lunch there of course, and a walk around the Citadel, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Blaye is about 35 minutes away. So if you are looking for closer fresh produce then there are other options:

- Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde (12 mins) – Sunday mornings
- Saint-Genis-de-Saintonge (20 mins) – Thursday, Saturday, Sunday mornings
- Jonzac (25 mins) – Tuesday, Friday, Saturday mornings
- Blaye (35 mins) – Saturday & Wednesday mornings
Things to do further afield
From Bordeaux, to Royan, and La Rochelle
If you’re willing to jump in the car and explore a little, you have everything you could possibly want. From historic cities to golden beaches and everything inbetween, right along our gorgeous coastline.
We are an hour away from Bordeaux with everything the vibrant city has to offer. Or less than an hour away from quiet sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast. Further North, we have Rochefort and La Rochelle which offer fine ways to discover the true Charente-Maritime culture.
Or hop across the estuary on the ferry, to the Medoc for glorious beaches, pine forests and world-renowned wine.
